Sharma was born in the Maharashtra town of Bansod, Nagpur. Purnima Sharma, his mother, is from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and his father, Gurunath Sharma, worked as a caretaker of a transport business storeroom.
Sharma was raised in Borivali by his grandparents and uncles due to his father's short salary. Sharma used his uncle's money to attend a cricket camp in 1999. Dinesh Lad, his camp coach, persuaded him to transfer to Swami Vivekanand International School, where Lad was the coach and the cricket facilities were superior to those at Sharma's previous school.
