History of IBM Company

IBM began with a series of technological innovations that were developed and commercialized in the late 19th century. On June 16, 1911, Charles Ranlett Flint merged four companies in New York State to form a fifth entity, the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR), based in Endicott, New York.

The five companies collectively employed 1,300 people and had offices and plants in Endicott and Binghamton, New York; Dayton, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Washington, D.C.; and Toronto, Canada.
