<mark> tag in HTML5

The <mark> tag is new in HTML5. It is used to defines marked text, if you want to highlight parts of text then use <mark> tag.

Important Definition

  • Most browsers will display the <mark> element with the following default values including like: background-color (yellow) & color (black).
  • The <mark> is used to denote content which has a degree of relevance, while <strong> indicates spans of text of importance.
  • Open & close tag required of <mark>.
  • Don't use <mark> for syntax highlighting purposes.
