She attended high school at Saint Joseph Notre Dame and graduated to community theatre and productions in 1997. She studied theatre at UCLA and then at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Heller's brother's name is Nate, who is a musician and composed the scores for all three of her feature films. Her sister, Emily is a stand-up comic, as well as a producer and writer for the HBO comedy Barry. She is best known for directing the films The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015), Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018), and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019), as well as acting in The Queen’s Gambit (2020).
